Your Wedding Planning Kick-Off

By Allie Jenkenson

Planning a wedding is an involved process, and it is sometime difficult to know where to start. This guide is meant to help you break that uncertainty and get the ball rolling

Where you're going to have your ceremony and reception will effect many other choices, so you should start with this. Keep in mind how many guests you think you'll be having to be sure that your location can accommodate them all.

Budgeting, while not the most fun part, is crucial to the success of your event. Without budgeting you risk running out of money on luxuries before you've paid for the essentials. Sit down with your groom and your families if they will be contributing and determine how much you can afford to spend.

Of course you will want to begin shopping for your dress. There are a number of different styles that will flatter different figures, so spend some time figuring out what works for you. Its a good idea to bring some friends along in order to get multiple opinions, but the final choice is always yours.

Choosing a caterer can be tricky. Try to figure out what tone you're trying to achieve with your event and try to find food that both fits that theme and your budget. Most caterers will offer free or low priced tasting, so you may want to take advantage of this.

The guest list can be a sore point in wedding planning. You may both want many friends, family members, and coworkers there, and your parents may be even more eager to invite people to see your big day. Just keep in mind one of the best ways to stay on budget is to limit the guest list. Try to keep it to people you truly know and want there to celebrate with you.

Once the guest list is made you will have to think about invitations. These should go out several months before your wedding to give everyone involved the time to plan. You can find a number of unique designs or even design your own in some shops online.

Your wedding cake will be the centerpiece of the reception and therefore should reflect your personality and tastes. Visit several bakers to examine your options and try to get an idea of what your looking for. Most bakers will be more than willing to work with you to achieve your vision.

Well there you have it. This is a good starting place, but there's plenty more to do. Remember to relax and enjoy this process.
