How To Get Ready For A Wedding Speech

By Saorise Goldflatt

The preparation for a wedding toast can cause many sleepless nights near the wedding time. It does not really matter what capacity you are in be it Bride, Groom, Best Man, Groomsman, Father of the Bride or Maid of Honor, all can be stressful. So how do you prepare for the wedding speech?

Below outlines some simple tips for your wedding toast:

Structure:

It is easier if you have some structure to the toast. Start with an introduction of yourself and get the thank you's out of the way. The launch into the body of your toast be it a story about the bride or groom or otherwise. Finally, end with a toast and a well wishing for the happy couple.

During the lead up to the wedding:

Once you have your draft wedding toast prepared, you will need to set aside some time to practice it. All speeches have been practiced, the easier it looks, the more it has been practiced. Take ten minutes a day to stand in front of the mirror and read aloud to see if it makes sense and flows well. It is also a good opportunity to check if you have omitted anyone you should have thanked!

Tempo:

Of course it can be nerve wracking to stand up in front of a number of people even if you know them very well. Your body will react by trying to end the speech before you even start. The wedding audience will be very much on your side so do not let the nerves consume you and take a deep breath before starting.

Complexity:

When people complain about wedding toasts being long winded, it is mainly because the speaker has tried desperately to be funny and told a story that has lost the audience (and himself in some cases!). Make sure material will be appreciated by all the wedding audience and not just a select few.

Example Wedding Toasts:

It does help to get your hands on some sample speeches. Although the content will be unique to you, the examples do give some good ideas around structure and delivery. In some cases, they outline what to avoid as well.

There are numerous sites that will help you prepare for your wedding toast.
