Wedding Songs: First Dance Choices and Considerations

By Daniel De Henney

When it comes to weddings songs, first dance selection is an important issue as most bands or DJ's that are hired for a wedding will ask you what you want. So, take your time for this and choose your first dance wedding songs.

A related decision that needs to be made in addition to the first dance wedding songs is who is going to dance it. In the past with wedding songs, first dance performance was delivered by the newly married daughter and her father. In recent times, however, the trend has gone towards the fresh bride and groom to open the first dance.

Once it is determined who is dancing the first dance at the wedding, you should look at the personal taste and preferences of them. If, for example, the father loves evergreens or songs from his era, you might grant him the favor by selecting a first dance wedding song that matches this setting.

If you are planning to have your first dance with your new spouse, you will find that choosing the right song can be both more and less difficult. What if you have drastically different tastes and what if you are interested in moving forward together? The truth is that there are plenty of ways for you to compromise.

Generally speaking, wedding songs, first dance and who to dance the first dance are difficult decision that need to be made. But so it is with many decisions that need to be made in a wedding preparation. It is a good idea to take brainstorm with your future spouse and see whether there are any cross over points or at least a common theme that both of you are showing.

In some cases, this technique does not yield a result at first. Simply repeat the process and aim at honesty and understanding. You should never get to the point where you flip a coin or something like that - make sure that you both are happy with the decision. It is best to try to explain why you like a certain song or why you think it is a suitable choice.

If you are a guy, don't just shut down a suggestion because the song might be a little too emotional for you. Wedding songs first dance pieces are normally fairly much like that. Just be open to it, as the wedding does not have to be rigid or all too manly, allow some space for sappiness.

Don't rush. Relax and make a wise decision for the wedding song that makes both of you happy and those that will be dancing it. At the end of the day it's most important that you do dance the dance together!
