The Garden Wedding Has Become A Tradition In The 21st Century

By Zoe Clay

From May to August every year we celebrate the wedding season. These are the summer months and they are perfect for having a garden wedding. The garden wedding has always been a tried and trusted favorite for couples getting married, but this has expanded in the 21st century to even more unconventional venues such as the zoo, the beach, national parks, vineyards and other venues of the less traditional type.

It is ideal to have a summer wedding out of doors as the long afternoons can be taken advantage of and can you just imagine exchanging wedding vows with a striking sunset as your backdrop. It doesn't get much better than that. Unfortunately a sunset is not made to order, but you never know and you might get lucky.

Organizing a garden wedding means you are able to keep things simple. Fresh cut flowers such as sunflowers make for striking centerpieces, and fresh fruit and even vegetables may be used in your flower arrangements. One very good summery idea is to fill glass vases or bowls with bright yellow lemons and make use of gingham tablecloths. To light the garden you can use candles, or even string up lanterns.

If the garden setting you choose for your wedding is in bloom, it will hardly be necessary to purchase flowers and this can save you quite a lot of money. Fresh cut flowers pensive, but with the correct garden setting you won't need these. Remember that an alternative plan needs to be in place in case the weather is bad, so a Marquee may need to be hired and erected for the day.

Another consideration is the local wildlife, nature has a way of keeping your ideas of the perfect outdoor wedding in check. You may have to contend with bees, flies or mosquitoes. In case of this it is a great idea to provide citronella candles on the tables, these create ambiance as well as smell good and keep these small pests away. Bug spray does not smell nearly as good as citronella and this natural insect repellant actually works very well. Large incense sticks especially designed for the garden are also available and these work well too.

A summer wedding in a garden, in the evening is delightful, there are no strict dress rules for your guests, however the trick is to dress elegantly without being too casual. The bride's dress should never be longer than ankle length as this may be difficult to manage in a garden setting. Trains are not a good idea either as they may become soiled or even worse, torn. Leave the beads and sequins at home and dress simply.

Because the weather is warm in the summer, the bride and bridal party are able to wear outfits that are cool. They can be strapless or sleeveless, and hairstyles should also take the weather into account. The humidity can affect your hairstyle and having an upswept style, may be the most practical approach. Tucking a single flower into the hair also looks elegant and summery.

Traditional heavy bridal gowns are not appropriate for summer weddings out of doors. Heavy fabrics and designs are not recommended, they are too bulky and summer fabrics should be used. A bridal gown made out of light silk, chiffon, crepe or summer weight linen will be both cool and comfortable.
