Smart Advice for Beach Wedding Clothes

By Chris Hwang

If you've been invited to a wedding on the beach but you've never attended one before, you may be unclear about how to choose appropriate beach wedding clothes. Most weddings are formal, and if not, they are at least dressy. But this one will be on the beach!

Guys, should you wear a designer silk suit or tropical-print beach shorts? Do you comb your hair neatly or leave it wild and tangled in true surfer fashion? Ladies, should you wear those $500 red Prada pumps you save for special occasions - or would a pair of flip-flops do just as well? Normally, a beach ceremony is a more casual affair than a traditional church wedding. Beach attire for a seaside wedding is typically less formal as well.

If you're lucky, your invitation to the wedding includes tips on what to wear on the wedding beach. If not, send an email to the couple asking them for suggestions before you start planning your attire. They will probably recommend beach wedding clothes with an upscale look. They'll appreciate your interest and that you are planning to attend, no matter what beach wedding attire they recommend.

If after asking you are still bewildered, here are some guidelines to help:

Men's Beach Wedding Attire: Forget about black, because it is usually reserved for the groom (although this restriction is usually not as strictly observed as white clothing being limited to brides). Dress slacks and a white cotton shirt with a button-down collar are usually safe choices for an informal ceremony.

If you would be more comfortable wearing a suit, look for a pair of light-colored linen slacks with a matching jacket and a casual striped shirt. This type of outfit will provide relaxed formality and help you achieve the perfect balance between dressy and sporty. Does the idea of more casual beach wedding clothes appeal to you? If so, opt for well-tailored cotton, linen or silk-blend draw-string shorts or pants. Match them up with a silk shirt that features a colorful tropical print.

Leather sandals are a satisfactory choice for shoes, although you'll want to make sure they have enough openings to let the sand escape. That's not an issue with leather flip-flops, which also work well. Depending on how informal the ceremony is and what else you're wearing, you can even go barefoot. Take care not to overdo it though. You wouldn't want to go without shoes if you're wearing a classy linen suit.

Women's Beach Wedding Attire: You don't want to upstage the bride with your beach wedding clothes, so whatever you decide to wear, don't out-dress her. Formal weddings give you more freedom to wear dressy clothes, but if the ceremony is casual, your best choice is the type of beach attire you might wear to a fancy resort. Cotton or rayon lightweight skirts are perfect if the wedding beach is in the tropics. You'll achieve a flawless look if you pair one of these skirts with a cotton or rayon island-style top in bright, primary colors. A well-tailored jersey dress is another ideal option.

Shorter dresses or skirts work best at the beach. Due to the environment, it's generally a good idea to avoid long dresses and high heels, both of which make negotiating deep sand almost impossible. Add some stylish, understated "bling" such as an island-themed bracelet, necklace and earrings and you're all set.

Dressy flip-flops or sandals with painted toenails finish the look wonderfully. If you choose to go barefoot, try wearing one or two pieces of foot jewelry. A toe ring, barefoot sandals or an ankle bracelet work particularly well if made from seashells, coral or other items that match your beach wedding clothes.
