For the last several years I've been a quite successful wedding planner for all types of weddings. The most important part in my books is making sure the Brides Maids complement the colors of the bride along with the wedding overall.
What you want to do is make sure your dress complements the brides dress and does not take away from it in anyway, shape or form! Granted it may not sound like a big deal but it ACTUALLY is a big deal since you do not want to throw off the whole color scheme do you? Of course you do not...
On a side note, never try to look better then the bride at her wedding since people have been put on death row for less offenses! ;-)
So, what you need to do is make sure the bride actually has taste in fashion and colors and if she does then great. If not, politely tell her that she needs help and you will be the one to help her out.
Pick out a beautiful dress with beautiful complementary colors to the bride and make sure it is not more extravagant then her dress in any way, again, this is obvious but you would not believe what I have seen in my years of doing this.
So, look at all of your options out there locally and on the internet. Pay attention to what the fabric is, the texture, the color and the cost!
Now, there's designer labels that most can't afford but if you are not worrying about cash and must have a brand name then go for it. Otherwise, this is not something that is crucial at all since appearance is what matters at a wedding and not who made it.
Seriously, just coordinate everything with the bride and the other brides maids and you will be 100% further then most people when they are preparing for a wedding, that is for sure!
